NEW YORK (Nov. 18, 2020) – The American Institute of CPAs and CPA.com today recognized former AICPA chair and current CPA.com board member Tim Christen on his appointment to the board of trustees of the prestigious Financial Accounting Foundation.

Christen is chairman of the board of Baker Tilly International and has over 30 years of experience in public accounting. He is the former chairman and CEO of Baker Tilly US, LLP, and served as chairman of the AICPA from 2015-2016. Christen has been honored by Accounting Today as one of the Top 100 most influential people in the profession and by Inside Public Accounting as one of the most admired U.S. managing partners.

The FAF is the parent organization of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). Christen is one of five new trustee appointees whose terms will run from Jan. 1, 2021, to Dec. 31, 2025.

Next Phase Shifts to a First-Come, First-Served Basis in Early November

NEW YORK (Oct. 28, 2020) – More than 90 percent of the American Institute of CPAs’ major firms group, which represents most of the nation’s top 100 CPA firms, have applied to secure their existing online branding under the new restricted Internet domain for the accounting profession, .cpa.

CPA.com has seen a similarly strong response from the next 400 largest firms, with more than 70 percent of these firms advancing applications through an early registration process that began Sept. 1. This initial, protected phase ends at 10 a.m. Eastern, Oct. 31. The first batch of preferred names will be released in early November, after which future requests will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Applying for a .cpa domain is an important, long-term strategic decision for CPA firms,” said Erik Asgeirsson, president and CEO of CPA.com. “Restricted domains are part of the new way of doing business, a more secure, more on-brand presence for firms and their clients. We’re urging firm leaders who want to make sure they protect their existing digital branding to apply before Oct. 31.”

As a restricted domain, only licensed CPA firms can apply for .cpa. For the initial application period ending Oct. 31, preferred domains are awarded based on logic-based criteria verified by an independent third party and firms will be notified of the outcome of their application by Nov. 5.

Many firms submitted multiple applications that went beyond their current online branding and showed considerable creativity and strategic thinking.

“The profession sometimes struggles with associating advisory services with our credential,” said Jim Bourke, managing director of advisory services for Withum, a Top 25 firm. “By migrating from Withum.com to Withum.cpa, we’re linking the CPA brand to our firm in an unmistakable way and doing our part to link audit, tax, and, more importantly, advisory services with the CPA brand.”

After the early application period, firms can apply on a rolling basis. Individually licensed CPAs can apply for their preferred .cpa domain beginning in January 2021 once general availability opens.

The AICPA was awarded ownership and management of .cpa last year by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). CPA.com is responsible for managing the service.

Thousands of Applications Submitted by Firms During First Few Weeks

NEW YORK (Sept. 24, 2020) – Thousands of CPA firms, including many of the nation’s largest, have moved quickly to reserve their existing branded domains under the new restricted Internet domain, .cpa, according to CPA.com.

Well over half of the 100 biggest U.S. firms – as well as an equally large percentage of the next 400 – have begun advancing their applications as part of the early phase of the .cpa registration process, which launched on Sept. 1.

The first phase of .cpa’s rollout, which ends on Oct. 31, is designed to help firms acquire domains that are most consistent with their current digital branding. This initial pool will be considered en masse so no one has a time advantage in filing during this first phase.

“CPA firms have really grasped the advantages the .cpa domain brings to their online presence,” said Erik Asgeirsson, president and CEO of CPA.com. “These restricted domains ensure greater trust in online interactions between CPAs and their clients, and – at the same time – firms are seeing the larger branding opportunity .cpa represents. The reception has been very positive, and firms are asking smart, constructive questions around adoption and implementation, which bodes well for broad-based activation.”

.CPA is what’s known as a top-level domain, which describes the letters found at the end of an Internet address, such as .com. The use of specialized or restricted top-level domains has grown dramatically in recent years as businesses, organizations and online communities seek to promote their visibility and authenticity in the digital world. .CPA also has improved security compared to unrestricted domains.

Cloud Solution Incorporates Enhanced Administrative Capabilities to Manage PPP Loan Forgiveness and Provide Lending Solutions to CPA Clients

NEW YORK (Sept. 22, 2020) – The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), its business and technology arm, CPA.com, and fintech leader Biz2Credit today announced they are teaming up on a new platform, CPALoanPortal.com, to streamline the process for CPA firms advising small businesses both on loan forgiveness under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and additional small business financing options that clients may need to fund growth.

The platform adds new CPA-centric capabilities to the automated PPP loan forgiveness tool (PPPForgivenessTool.com) the companies introduced in July that has been used by over 30,000 borrowers and more than 5,000 CPAs and financial professionals so far. It incorporates the PPP forgiveness calculator developed by the AICPA and is available to any business approved for a PPP loan. The platform produces all government forms required under the PPP program, supports calculations on payroll and other expenses, and produces a master report with the applicant’s electronic signature that can be delivered to the underwriting lender.

The basic loan forgiveness tool is included in CPALoanPortal.com, with enhanced functionality now available specifically for CPA firms to support clients more efficiently. These features include:

• Functionality that allows firms to easily aggregate clients, customize engagements and track progress on loan and financing applications
• Integration to additional lending options for clients
• Enhanced customer service for CPA firms

Two subscription tiers, premium and enterprise, are available based on the number of users and volume of loan applications a firm is managing. The original basic loan forgiveness application service remains free.
